How To Clean Car Floor Mats

Removing Floor Mats from Car

Many drivers depend on their car floor mats in order to protect their vehicle’s interior. However, if you’re not taking good care of them, they’ll quickly become a hassle to maintain. Find out how to clean car floor mats quickly with a little help from the team at the Auffenberg Dealer Group.

What Supplies Do I Need to Clean Car Floor Mats?

When you’re cleaning rubber floor mats or carpet floor mats, you’ll want to have a hose or bucket of water, and a place to let your mats dry! You’ll also want to have the proper tools to clean the material:

  • Rubber Floor Mats: In addition to what we’ve listed above, you’ll want to have a rubber floor mat cleanser, a stiff bristle brush, and a microfiber towel.
  • Carpet Floor Mats: Once you have your regular vacuum, choose a carpet floor mat cleaner and a brush. Although you can hang your floor mats up to dry, a wet-vac will greatly accelerate the process.

You’ll want to have everything you need on hand before you get started.

How to Clean Rubber Floor Mats

  1. Take the rubber floor mats out of your vehicle. This will help to prevent damage to your interior.
  2. Shake out the mats to remove heavy debris. Then rinse them with clean water.
  3. Apply your preferred rubber cleanser and gently scrub them down with your stiff-bristled brush.
  4. Rinse the mats clean with your hose or your bucket of water.
  5. Dry each mat with a microfiber towel, or hang them up in a sunny place to dry. Don’t place them back in your vehicle until they’re back to normal.

How to Clean Carpet Floor Mats

  1. Take your carpet floor mats out of your vehicle.
  2. Take a vacuum to your carpet floor mats in order to remove debris.
  3. Whack the floor mats against a hard surface in order to remove smaller particles.
  4. Use your preferred carpet cleaner to remove set-in stains and dirt. Follow the directions given for the product.
  5. Rinse each mat thoroughly to remove residue from the cleaner.
  6. Dry each mat before placing them back into your vehicle. Leaving wet carpet mats on the floor can quickly generate mold.
  7. Drying your mats with a wet-vac is the best solution, but if you have time to spare, you can also hang them up in a sunny place to dry.
