How to Check Car Oil

Wiping Oil Off Dip Stick

Motor oil is one of the most essential fluids in your vehicle, and since it’s always important to maintain the proper levels, you should regularly check your oil levels. Don’t worry, though; learning how to check engine oil only takes a few moments and is easy to do! And if your oil level is off or you need an oil change near East St. Louis or O'Fallon, you know where to come.

Why Should You Learn How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car?

Nearly every driver knows that motor oil is important, but not everyone understands that it’s important to check your levels every month! Motor oil lubricates your vehicle’s most important internal components, and since it’s always in motion, it helps to prevent the overheating of your engine.

A single filling of motor oil should last you between 5,000 and 10,000 miles, but regular checks can help you catch leaks and identify problems before they stop your vehicle in its tracks.

Step-By-Step: How to Check Car Oil

Before you get started, note that some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors right on their dashboards. Check yours before you get under the hood.

If you need to check your oil levels manually, or just want to be sure that your electronic monitor is working properly, just take the following steps:

  • Park the vehicle on level ground, and let the engine cool.
  • Open the hood and prop it open. Locate the dipstick next to the oil reservoir.
  • Pull out the dipstick, but don’t read the level yet. Wipe it off with a rag and fully reinsert.
  • Now pull the dipstick out once more to accurately read the level.

If your car oil level is within the cross-hatched area, or if it falls between the “Full” lines, you’re ready to get back on the road.

If your level is too low, you’ll want to add more right away. Be careful while you do so, and work slowly using a funnel. Driving with too much oil is almost as dangerous as driving with too little! Make sure to use the type of oil that’s been recommended for your vehicle. Contact a service expert or check your owner’s manual for details.
