How to Get Smoke Smell Out of a Car

Vacuuming Car Seat

Many used vehicle drivers will choose to take advantage of the best deal that they can find, even if that vehicle carries an undesirable smoke smell. You won’t have to worry about that when you shop at Auffenberg Dealer Group, but if you’v got a smoky car, we can help.

How to Remove the Smoke Smell from Car Upholstery

If your vehicle has cloth carpeting and upholstery, you’ll need to have baking soda and a vacuum on hand. Then, take these steps to get the smoke smell out of your car:

  1. Vacuum the carpets and upholstery as thoroughly as you can. Don’t forget to reach under the seats and go into the crevices, as well!
  2. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over all the cloth surfaces in the interior. Leave it to sit for a fair amount of time, so it can act as an odor neutralizer and eliminate the smoke smell.
  3. Pickup up your vacuum once again, clean the baking soda out of your vehicle’s interior. If the odor persists, throw down another thin layer of baking soda, or throw a small amount onto any especially smelly spots. You can also leave an open container of baking soda in your vehicle overnight.

How to Remove the Smoke Smell from Leather and Trim

Even if you don’t have cloth seating, you still might find that smoke smell gets trapped in your interior. Thankfully, learning how to get rid of the smoke smell in your car is easy where leather’s involved, as well! Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. If you want to get the smoke smell out of leather car seats, you’ll need a specially-formulated cleaner. For the hard or soft-touch surfaces that comprise your vehicle’s trim, you’ll also want to purchase a product made for these specific materials. Both can be found at your local parts department.
  2. Use the specialized cleaner to wipe down each surface multiple times. Remember to be thorough here as well, and don’t be afraid to go a few rounds. Here as well, an open container of baking soda should help to draw out some of the bad smells, if you leave it inside the car overnight.

Before you close up shop, remember to wipe down the car windows, along with the front and back windshields, with an ammonia-free cleaner. Wipe down and clean out the air vents, remembering to replace the cabin air filter when you’re finished!
