2021 Dodge Charger Steering Wheel with Paddle Shifters

What do paddle shifters do? If you have them in your O'Fallon vehicle but don’t know how to use paddle shifters, you’re in for a real treat. Paddle shifters give you the ability to turn your automatic transmission into a sort of manual by shifting into a certain gear, with the paddles shifting your gears without you needing to use a clutch. Check out Auffenberg Dealer Group’s guide to how to use paddle shifters and while you’re here, be sure to check out our service team and see what they can do when it’s time for maintenance.

What Are Paddle Shifters?

Caseyville drivers will find paddle shifters on sportier vehicles and higher trim levels because of their ease of use in switching gears quickly. You’ll typically find them behind or close to the steering wheel, with one paddle bringing you down a gear while the other brings you up a gear. When you use the paddle, the clutch receives an electronic signal to shift the gear.

Paddle shifters are simple to operate and they let you get a new level of control over your RPMs. With correct downshifting, you can even get a longer life on your brake pads when you use paddle shifters.

How to Use Paddle Shifters

If you have a East St. Louis car with paddle shifters, you’ll want to enter manual mode to allow you to paddle shift. The right paddle will generally upshift while the left paddle downshifts. This allows you to switch gears manually. Thankfully, if you’re afraid about damaging your car with an incorrect shift, you’ll be glad to know that the gear won’t shift if any of these things happen:

  • You upshift before the engine hits the lower limit of the higher gear
  • You downshift before you hit the upper limit of the lower gear
  • You press one paddle while the other is being held down
  • You press both paddles at the same time
  • You try to shift to third or higher while stationary
  • If you want to switch back to automatic, just shift into D like you normally would.
